SDxCentral Quick Hits Uber Investigates Slack Hack

Uber has taken several of its internal communications and engineering systems offline as the company investigates a breach that took place Thursday afternoon. Employees were subsequently told not to use the company’s Slack channels and found they were unable to access other internal systems, two employees told The New York Times, which broke the story.

Before the messaging app went offline, Uber employees received a message that read, “I announce I am a hacker and Uber has suffered a data breach.” The person who claimed responsibility for the hack told The Times that he "had sent a text message to an Uber worker claiming to be a corporate information technology person."

After receiving the employee’s account password, the hacker tricked the employee into approving a push notification for multi-factor authentication (MFA) and was then able to use administrative credentials to access some of Uber’s network resources.

Under the Biden-Harris administrations' Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the new State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program will provides $1 billion in funding to SLT partners over 4 years, with $185 million available for FY22.

The cyber grant program will fund SLT efforts to establish governance frameworks "to address cyber threats and vulnerabilities, identify key vulnerabilities and evaluate needed capabilities, implement measures to mitigate the threats, and develop a 21st-century cyber workforce across local communities," according to a DHS announcement.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency will provide a suite of available resources, including state cybersecurity coordinators and cybersecurity advisors to support these efforts. As of today, applicants have 60 days to apply for a grant, which can be used to fund new or existing cybersecurity programs.
